Melanie Oudin is a former world junor No. 2 player. She achieved her career-high ranking of 42 on September 28, 2009. She rose to fame in Wimbledon 2009 where she reached the fourth round.
Oudin, whose father is of French descent, has a twin sister, Katherine, and a younger sister, Christina. She was home schooled from seventh grade on so that she could have more time for tennis practice, but admits envying her twin sister's experiences at a regular school. Melanie Oudin's idol is Belgian tennis player Justine Henin, because in her words "she proved you don't have to be tall to win things." Her grandmother inspired her and her sister to play tennis when she gave them racquets and lessons when they were young.<
Melanie Oudin turned professional in February 2008. She received a wild card at the Miami WTA tournament where she lost in the first round to Tathiana Garbin in three sets. She received a wild card at the 2008 US Open, her first Grand Slam appereance. Oudin lost in the first round to Jessica Moore 7-6, 7-6. She played at the 2008 Bell Challenge in Quebec City where she beat third seeded Sybille Bammer 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round and Russian Olga Puchkova 6-1, 7-6 in the second round. She reached her first WTA quarterfinals, but lost to 6th seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-6, 6-1.
Oudin qualified for the main draw at the 2009 Australian Open, her second Grand Slam appereance. She lost in the first round to Akgul Amanmuradova 6-1, 6-4. Oudin entered as a qualifier in the Wimbledon 2009 Grand Slam tournament. She rose to fame at the 2009 Wimbledon grand slam, reaching the fourth round at the tournament. On her way to the quarterfinals, Oudin beat No. 29 Sybille Bammer in the first round, Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round and No. 6 Jelena Jankovic in the third round. She lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in the fouth round in straight sets 6-4,. 7-5. Oudin won all the first three rounds in three sets at this tournament.
Melanie Oudin had a much better performance at the US Open 2009. She beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, Oudin stunned fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. She beat former US Open champion and World No. 1 Maria Sharapova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the fourth round, she beat No. 13 Nadia Petrova 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 again in three sets. She will face Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.
