Marcos Baghdatis became a professional player in 2003. He was the runner-up at the 2006 Australian Open and a semifinalist at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships. Baghdatis reached a career-high ATP ranking of World No. 8 on August 2006.

He began playing tennis at age of five and used to play tennis with his father and two older brothers, Marinos and Petros as a kid. His brother played for Cyprus in the Davis Cup. His Father Christos, owns a clothing store in Cyprus. Baghdatis has a younger sister Zena, who was adopted when she was one month old.

Marcos Baghdatis won the 2003 Australian Open Juniors title and is a runner-up at US Open Juniors in 2002-03. He won nine junior titles. He prefers playing on hard courts and is a baseliner. A powerful serve and a great forehand are his biggest weapons. Baghdatis' idols as a kid was Patrick Rafter, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. Baghdatis enjoys playing and watching soccer, with the team Apollo being his favorite in Cyprus. He was honored with "Man of the Year" title in Cyprus in 2005.

Baghdatis was a runner-up in the 2006 Australian Open where he lost to Roger Federer. His best performance at the Wimbledon came in 2006 reaching the semifinal. Baghdatis reached the fourth round at the French Open in 2007. At the US Open, Baghdatis reached the second round in 2004 and 2006.

In October 2009, he claimed his 3rd ATP Tour career title winning the If Stockholm Open 2009 in Stockholm, Sweden.
