Victoria Azarenka started the 2013 season with the Brisbane International tournament where she reached the semifinals. She withdrew in the semifinals with an injury. She later won her second grand slam title of the career winning the Australian Open grand slam. Azarenka rallied to beat sixth seeded Na Li 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In her semifinal match against Sloane Stephens Azarenka took an injury timeout after she dropped her serve in the penultimate game of second set and later came back to break Stephens' serve to win the match. The injury timeout became a controversy as it was taken in the middle of the set.
