Before the season, Roger Federer has announced that he would like to cut down on the number of the tournaments he play in 2013 to play the sport as long as possible. He began the 2013 season at the Australian Open grand slam. He opted to play the tournament without a warm up tournament. Federer reached the semifinals where he lost to Andy Murray in a thrilling five sets. This is Federer's first loss to Andy Murray in a grand slam match.
In February, Federer later played at the ABN AMRO World Tennis tournament where he suffered an upset to Julien Benneteau in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Roger Federer was in South Africa on February 19, 2013 and visited pre-schools in Limpopo Province. The schools are supported by the Roger Federer Foundation. Federer visited the schools accompanied by his mother Lynette, who is a native South African and a member of the Roger Federer Foundation's board of trustees. He spent several hours with children at the pre-schools and played games such as hopscotch, reading, colouring with the children.
