Rafael Nadal missed much of the 2012 season with a left knee injury. He lost in the second round of the Wimbledon 2012 in a shocking upset to Lukas Rosol on June 28, 2012 and hasn't played in an ATP event in the rest of the season.
Though, he recovered from his knee injury, Rafael Nadal still skipped the Australian Open 2013 grand slam with a stomach virus. He dropped a place in the ATP rankings table to No. 5 in January.
He made his return to the ATP World Tour at the VTR Open Chile. He reached the finals of both the singles and doubles event. Nadal later won the Brasil Open 2013 and Abierto Mexicano Telcel titles. He won 12 of the 13 matches he played in the 2013 season. The Abierto Mexicano title was his 38th clay court title, his seventh against Ferrer. Nadal also improved his head to head record against Ferrer to 17-4.
