David Ferrer reached the semifinals of the Australian Open 2013 grand slam tournament where he lost in straight sets to eventual winner Novak Djokovic. Earlier in January, Ferrer won the Heinenken Open title and reached the semifinals of ExxonMobil Open in Qatar.
He also win his 500th ATP tour level match at the Australian Open and was ranked No. 4 replacing Rafael Nadal in the ATP Rankings table. Ferrer also became the highest ranked Spanish player on the ATP Tour.
